YOU
CAN
VOTE.
For EU citizens in Berlin
Two elections.
One of them
is yours.
You hold the passport of another EU country and you are registered as a resident in Berlin. Then you are allowed to vote on 20 September. You do not have to sign up anywhere for it and you do not have to apply. Many people do not know this. That is why it is written here.
Yes: the Bezirksverordnetenversammlung (district assembly), BVV for short. The parliament of your district. It decides on schools, day-care centres, parks, streets, libraries and building projects on your doorstep. And on who becomes district mayor.
No: the Abgeordnetenhaus (Berlin state parliament). That one requires German citizenship. Both are elected on the same day. This is why your ballot paper lists the BVV only. That is not a mistake, it is the law as it stands.
How it works
Four steps,
that is all.
- Check whether you are allowed to vote. You need the citizenship of an EU country, you must be at least 16 years old on 20 September, and you must have been registered in Berlin as your main residence since 20 June 2026 at the latest. A second residence is not enough.
- Wait for the Wahlbenachrichtigung (polling card). It arrives automatically by post by 30 August. No application, no registration. The letter tells you your Wahllokal (polling station).
- No letter? Get in touch. If nothing has arrived by early September, call the Bezirkswahlamt (district electoral office) of your district or write to the Landeswahlamt (state electoral office). Do not wait until election day.
- Vote, on 20 September or by post before then.At the Wahllokal you need your ID card or passport. If you cannot make it on election day, apply for Briefwahl (postal vote). On the ballot paper you have one vote.
Sunday, 20 September 2026, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Anyone standing in the queue at 6 p.m. can still vote.
No promises
If you vote,
then vote
with care.
